Located in three of Ohio’s most beautiful state parks, the Great Ohio Lodges offer an array of indoor and outdoor activities for families, groups and other travelers seeking a crowd-free, hassle-free, affordable park experience this summer and beyond.
Architecturally reminiscent of historic lodges once built throughout the country by railroads, Burr Oak, Shawnee and Hueston Woods Lodges & Conference Centers all feature indoor and outdoor swimming pools, exercise equipment, game rooms, playgrounds and more. Hueston Woods and Shawnee both offer championship golf courses open mid-March to mid-November.
All three lodges feature ample space for business meetings as well as social functions such as weddings. Professional meeting planners, catering and complete audio-visual services round out the offerings. Burr Oak Conference Center facilities feature five meeting rooms accommodating up to 200 people. Shawnee’s seven meeting rooms handle up to 400 people while the Hueston Woods Conference Center can accommodate groups of up to 200 people with six conference rooms and a variety of breakout rooms.
Shawnee Lodge & Conference Center was built in 1972 and is known for spectacular views of Turkey Creek Lake from the lodge’s expansive lobby and deck. The building features heavy timber construction and furnishings and artwork crafted by local artisans.
The park is surrounded by the Shawnee State Park Forest west of Portsmouth in the hills just north of the Ohio River. The 63,000-acre forest is known as the “Little Smokies of Ohio” in reference to the area’s dense oak and hickory forest. Birders view wild turkeys and a wide variety of forest songbirds. The Shawnee Backpack Trail offers 42 miles of winding trails.
Shawnee State Park Lodge offers 50 guest rooms, 25 two-bedroom cottages, seven meeting rooms and a wide array of recreational offerings. The resort also features an 18-hole championship golf course with stunning views of the Ohio River, two swimming beaches, tennis, shuffleboard, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and nature center.
The 18-hole championship golf course measures 6,407 yards from the white tees and has a slope rating of 114 and U.S.G.A. rating of 69.7. The course was designed by Jack Kidwell and Mike Hurdzan.
Hueston Woods Lodge & Conference Center opened in 1967 and is located in College Corner near Cincinnati and Dayton. The lodge’s distinctive A-frame-shaped main building features a soaring stone fireplace. The lodge offers 94 guest rooms, two suites, 25 two-bedroom cottages and 12 one-bedroom cottages. Services include a full-service dining room, pool snack bar, cocktail lounge, gift shop, indoor and outdoor pools, paintball field, paintball target range, sauna, tennis, exercise equipment, basketball, horseback riding, game room, volleyball, biking, naturalist programs, hiking and jogging trails. The lake features swimming beaches, marinas, sailing, fishing and canoeing.
At Hueston Woods, golfers make their way through a heavily wooded course with several water hazards. The course features multiple doglegs and rolling hills. With four sets of tees the length of the course tops out at 7,080 yards.
Hueston Woods State Park offers a variety of wildlife habitats including mature forest, brush land, open fields, marsh and open water. The Hueston Woods State Nature Preserve located within the park functions as a wildlife rehabilitation facility where visitors can see recovering hawks, owls, bald and golden eagles and many native mammals. Nearby attractions include Miami University, Cincinnati, Dayton and Kings Island Amusement Park. The 1700s-style farming Pioneer Village is also close by.
Burr Oak Lodge & Conference Center is located on the edge of the Wayne National Forest in Southern Ohio an easy drive from Ohio University. Its lodge features a spacious lobby with huge windows offering spectacular views of the hills, trees and Burr Oak Lake. The resort includes 60 guest rooms; 30 fully furnished cottages; a campground; five meeting rooms; indoor and outdoor pools; tennis, basketball, volleyball, horseshoe and badminton courts and a playground. The park includes 40 miles of hiking trails, a 640-acre lake that allows outboard motors up to 10 horsepower and a marina with four launch ramps and pontoon boat rentals.
Burr Oak State Park 2,500 acres of streams, ravines, fields and forests that draw a variety of bird species. In all, more than 150 species have been observed in the park. The stream bottoms and ravines draw a variety of thrushes and ovenbirds in the nesting season. In the fields, vireos, chats, warblers and buntings can be observed. The park’s 600 acres of lakes draws herons, swans, tree swallows, warblers and various other waterfowl. When water levels are at their lowest in the fall, the area is home to migrating shorebirds, osprey and bald eagles.
