Located in West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, Canaan Valley Resort State Park is a four-season destination featuring skiing, golfing and many other activities both at the resort and in the surrounding area.
The valley is 13 miles long and three miles wide. With an average valley floor elevation of 3,300 feet and the surrounding peaks rising to 4,300 feet above sea level, temperatures tend to be cool and comfortable in summer, and snowfall averages more than 180 inches each winter. These factors combine to create excellent conditions that appeal to golfers and skiers alike.
The West Virginia State Park system dates back to the 1920s and features 34 parks, of which 10 provide lodging and fall into the “resort” category. One of the oldest of those is Canaan Valley State Park Resort, created in 1976. The resort recently completed a $34-million new construction and renovation project and is now commonly referred to as the “New” Canaan Valley Resort.
All 160 lodge rooms and suites were constructed during a $34 million renovation in 2013. The resort also offers 23 cabins and cottages.
Hotel rooms and suites feature 37-inch flat screen televisions, complimentary high-speed wireless Internet, refrigerators, microwaves, coffee pots and other modern amenities. Rooms are available in double queen and king options. The two-, three- and four-bedroom cabins and cottages are equipped with fireplaces, linens and full kitchens. The campground features 34 sites with full hookups as well as laundry and shower facilities.
The lodge features three dining options. The Hickory Dining Room is open year round and offers daily breakfast, lunch and dinner options. The Laurel Lounge is a full service bar with pub-style menu and is open daily from 5 p.m. except on Saturdays when it opens at 2 p.m. Season’s Café features a lighter menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The ski area features the Bear Paw Food Court with cafeteria-style dining while Quenchers Pub is a full-service bar serving sandwiches and snacks. Both are open December through March.
Warm Weather Activities
Guests will find several activities suitable for enjoying as a group or individually. Warm weather outdoor activities include hiking and biking trails, riding the ski area’s chairlift, geocaching, tubing the “Turtle Slide,” climbing wall and “Eurobungy” in summer.
The 18-hole championship golf course was designed by Geoffrey Cornish and is open April through early November. Rated four stars by Golf Digest and named one of the top 10 courses in West Virginia, the course features four sets of tees and ranges from 5,966 to 6,984 yards long. The course is flat with 65 sand bunkers throughout and water on eight holes.
The resort also offers trap shooting with various packages providing shells, pigeons, safety equipment and instruction.
The Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area is open from December through March (opening day this year is Dec. 19). With a vertical drop of 850 feet, a terrain park and 47 runs, the slopes offer options for beginning, intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. There is also a ski school for all levels of ability and equipment rentals. The resort also has plenty of options for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
The resort is also home to the longest tubing park in the Mid-Atlantic, with multiple lanes running 1,200 feet in length and a magic carpet to take tubers back up to the top. There is also a covered outdoor ice skating rink with sweeping views of the valley and mountain range.
Other activities include indoor and outdoor swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, tennis court, miniature golf, horseshoe pits, playground, sand volleyball court, soccer field, crafts, softball diamond, basketball arena, corn-hole toss, kite making, guided walks and wagon rides.
Groups and Meetings
Canaan Valley Resort features 25,000 square feet of flexible meeting space and 12 individual meeting venues that can accommodate up to 900 guests. The resort also has large outdoor venues including playing fields and a natural outdoor amphitheater suitable for concerts and large outdoor receptions. An outdoor covered pavilion offers sweeping views of the mountains and valley. Additionally, the Bear Paw Lodge at the adjacent ski area features 6,750 square feet of open space and an outdoor plaza and a deck overlooking a mountain stream, an especially popular setting for weddings.
